Domenico Cimarosa Bust

Domenico Cimarosa understood how several people could sing together while wanting different things. In his comic operas, ensembles allow misunderstandings, concealed relationships, and competing plans to unfold at once. The musical organization keeps a crowded situation intelligible.

Born in Aversa in 1749, he trained in Naples and built an international career that took him to the Russian court and Vienna. The comedy depends on affection colliding with calculations about rank and money.

Cimarosa returned to Naples and became caught in the political upheavals surrounding the republic of 1799. Imprisonment and subsequent release interrupted his career. He died in Venice in 1801; the story that he was poisoned is not securely established.

His music is often described as graceful, but that description can understate its dramatic work. A well-shaped melody and a carefully timed ensemble make social pressure audible without requiring a narrator to explain it.
