The collection and its history

The Galleria Borghese is a collection with a strong personal beginning and a complicated later history. Cardinal Scipione Borghese used the position and resources of his family, newly elevated by the election of Pope Paul V in 1605, to acquire art and commission new work. The villa provided a setting in which objects, architecture, and decoration could reinforce one another.
Some acquisitions were coercive. The museum's own collection history records the seizure of paintings from the Cavalier d'Arpino and the removal of Raphael's Deposition from Perugia for the cardinal. Patronage here should be understood alongside the unequal power that made certain purchases and transfers possible.
Bernini's sculptures reward attention to action. David twists before releasing his sling, while Apollo and Daphne turns a moment of pursuit into a transformation of flesh into bark and leaves. Canova's later portrait of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus introduces a different family generation and a different sculptural language. The decorated rooms deserve attention alongside the works.
