Pietro Metastasio’s words could become several different operas. Composers repeatedly set his librettos, adapting the same dramatic framework to new singers and musical priorities. In this world, a text was a durable resource rather than the property of a single definitive score.

Born Pietro Trapassi in Rome in 1698, he developed a literary identity under the name Metastasio. Didone abbandonata, first performed in 1724, established an important early success. His later career centered on the imperial court in Vienna.

The plots often place a ruler or hero between private attachment and public obligation. Recitative advances the situation, while an aria can hold a character within a moment of decision or feeling. The division creates opportunities for musical invention as well as potential tensions between action and reflection.

Metastasio supplied a carefully structured drama, but singers and composers changed how it reached an audience. His texts traveled through Europe’s theaters in a succession of new musical forms.
