Giorgio Andreoli Bust

Giorgio Andreoli’s reputation rests on a surface that changes as light meets it. His Gubbio workshop specialized in metallic luster on maiolica, with gold and ruby effects applied to already glazed pottery through an additional firing. The result could make parts of a painted vessel appear to catch fire without turning the object into metal.

Luster decoration had a long history before Andreoli. His distinction lies in the particular quality and organization of the Gubbio production, rather than the invention of the entire technique. Workshop documents record collaborations in which one craftsman painted and another applied the luster.

A tazza in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is cataloged as made in Urbino with Gubbio luster, attributed to Andreoli as decorator. That description separates stages of production which the simple phrase by Giorgio Andreoli would collapse. Renaissance ceramics moved between specialists as well as between buyers.

His dates of birth and death remain uncertain. The decorated objects and records of workshop collaboration offer firmer evidence of how the Gubbio business operated.
