A fossil shell on a desk supplied Giacomo Zanella with the subject of his most familiar poem. Sopra una conchiglia fossile nel mio studio, written in 1864, places the small object against an immense history of the earth. Scientific discovery becomes material for poetry, rather than remaining a topic outside it.
Zanella was a priest and teacher, born in 1820 near Vicenza. He sought ways to reconcile the achievements of science with Catholic belief, but his interest in scientific knowledge did not mean that he accepted every new theory. He opposed Darwinism, a distinction lost when he is described simply as a modern scientific poet.
The fossil poem was written for Luigi Luzzatti’s wedding. That occasion connects two people commemorated on the Pincio: a poet concerned with faith and knowledge, and a future statesman concerned with economic and legal reform. Occasional verse could carry an argument much larger than the private event that prompted it.
Zanella’s later poetry also attends to the countryside around his home. The scale shifts from geological time to cultivated land and local observation, without requiring the landscape to become merely a decorative background.
