Guglielmo Massaia spent much of his adult life in Ethiopia as a Capuchin missionary. Born Lorenzo Antonio Massaia in Piedmont in 1809, he took the name Guglielmo when he entered the order. In 1846 he was appointed to lead a Catholic mission among the Oromo peoples of the Ethiopian region.
His work involved establishing mission communities, learning languages, and negotiating permission to remain. Ethiopia already had a long Christian history, centered on its own Orthodox Church; Catholic expansion therefore encountered existing religious institutions as well as local rulers and communities with different traditions.
Massaia developed a relationship with Menelik, then ruler of Shewa, and became involved in diplomacy at a time of growing European interest in the region. Religious activity could not be separated from struggles for political power. Expulsions and restrictions repeatedly interrupted his mission.
Back in Italy, he became a cardinal in 1884 and wrote extensive memoirs of his African years. He died in 1889. Those volumes preserve detailed observations, but they also express a missionary's aims and assumptions, which readers need to consider when using them as evidence about Ethiopian societies.
